Our Mission
Acuity Independent Winter Guard is an ACU performing ensemble of flags, rifles, sabers, and dancers that competes in the North Texas Color Guard Association. We are dedicated to sharing the art of color guard with over 1000 different middle school, high school, and college level color guards from across the state of Texas. Acuity Independent strives to be a winter guard that is always doing something out of the box or different from our competitors in either soundtrack, costuming, props, or theme.
We have set our sites on progressing to the international stage of WGI in the near future.
Time Commitment
The winter guard typically rehearses two days per week, beginning in December after marching season has concluded, all the way through the beginning of April, when we typically have spring show. Rehearsal schedules are created by staff and the winter guard captain taking into consideration all members' other commitments such as classes and jobs. While we cannot work around all obstacles, we do our best to accommodate and create the most effective rehearsals with what we are presented with that season. The group competes in the Independent A class for the North Texas Color Guard Association, typically attending four or five competitions in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
Attendance at all rehearsals and competitions are required, unless previously discussed with staff.
Auditions
A brief audition consisting of fundamentals of flag and rifle will be held during the fall semester around thanksgiving break. Saber line or dance line auditions will be determined later in the season at the staff's discretion. All staff decisions are final, as made evident by cast member contracts to be sent out following auditions. By signing the the cast member contract you are agreeing to any and all staff requirements, rehearsal and competition schedules, choreography, costuming, and travel/caravan plans. Staff will take into consideration or excuse many, if not all, conflicts or concerns as long as they are presented in a timely manner of auditions.
Conditional contracts are a possibility to be given to individuals who do not perform as well as they had hoped at auditions, but are serious about working hard and learning the art of color guard.
Enrollment & Expectations
Unlike color guard in the fall, the winter guard is not a class. It is an extra curricular activity, but attendance is expected and required at all rehearsals and performances. You must confirm your intentions via email, phone call, or any other form of written communication to the staff to join Acuity Independent once a member contract has been extended to you in order to be accepted as a member of the ensemble. No jewelry will be worn during a performance unless it is given to you as part of your uniform. Hair dyed an unnatural color is allowed within reason, but staff may ask that you dye it an abnormal color that is show related if you would like. A good attitude and a willingness to learn and try new things is always asked of you.
Cast members will conduct themselves at all rehearsals and competitions in such a manner that is professional and respectable. This includes both ones own attitude and appearance at every Acuity sanctioned event.
